ITALIAN CULTURE
A VIEW FROM AMERICA
By Peter Dorato and Sylvia Dorato
New Edition - Hardcover, 3rd Printing, full color jacket!
List price: $29
ABOUT THIS BOOK
This book is a view of Italian Culture
as seen by two, second- and third-generation Italian-Americans. Their
Italian Family was from the Piedmont region of Italy, and the view does
have a Piedmontese focus, but all of Italy and Italian culture is explored.
Topics include, elements of the Italian language (including the dialects
of Piedmont and Naples), popular music, history, food and wine, and growing
up Italian in the USA. Both authors are engineers, so a special chapter
is included on left-brained Italians (mathematicians, scientists, and
engineers), a subject not commonly included in books on Italian culture.
The material in the book has been used by the first author in a course
on Italian Culture taught in the Division of Continuing Education at the
University of New Mexico since 1993.
MY LIFE AND TRAVELS
WITH THE FATHER OF FUZZY LOGIC By Fay Zadeh
List price: $35
ABOUT THIS BOOK
You are invited to come fly with the
Zadehs on their magic carpet as they visit exotic places around the globe.
Learn about distant lands and peoples through the experiences of two world
travelers who have shared an extraordinary lifetime together. Accompany
them on their trek from the old world to the new, and their many trips
back to the old. Learn about the fascinating man who has been dubbed,
"The Father of Fuzzy Logic." Mrs. Zadeh wanted to publish this book because
there has been nothing personal written about her husband other than his
scientific and technical achievements. "Since as a person he has an unusual
character, besides his many hobbies, varied interests, and even hidden
passions, I thought his background and life in general would make him
more interesting and accessible," she says. "We have traveled so much
together, with some unusual adventures... I wanted to share our experiences
with others... to know him as someone who has his feet on the ground,
even though he remains a kind of "Flying Dutchman" and continues to spread
his thoughts around the world." In this charming, descriptive narrative,
Mrs. Zadeh shares many personal impressions of people and places. Starting
from an early age, Mrs. Zadeh has collected many interesting stories about
"The Father of Fuzzy Logic". The reader will find these supplemented by
anecdotes of colleagues, relatives, and friends in a separate appendix
at the back of the book along with recipes of Lotfi's favorite foods.
Climb aboard the Zadehs’ magic carpet of memories and find out more about
the "The Father of Fuzzy Logic."
INTELLIGENT AUTOMATION
AND SOFT COMPUTING Editors: M. Jamshidi, C.C. Nguyen, R. Lumia and J. Yuh
List price: $120
ABOUT THIS BOOK
Economics, automation, and manufacturing
are among areas which have replaced the global hostilities and confrontations
of the past political scene. Recently, environmental issues have also
been raised in many international forums, such as the Montreal Protocol,
which would make the role of highly interdisciplinary fields such as manufacturing,
automation, and intelligent systems even more important. One of the most
critical factors in manufacturing is intelligent industrial automation.
The role of Artificial Intelligence and Soft Computing (Fuzzy Logic, Neural
Networks, Genetic Algorithms, and Probabilistic Reasoning) in producing
user-friendly "smart products is now a reality in the global market place.
MIQ (Machine Intelligence Quotient) is fast becoming an attribute
for many household products. The First World Automation Congress -- WAC
'94 -- was a common forum for international scientists, engineers, and
technologists to come together and discuss these issues.
The objective of this first volume of TSI Press' Series on Intelligent Automation and Soft Computing is to report on the technical presentations of the WAC '94.

ABOUT THIS BOOK
Recently, the need for efficient automation
and machine intelligence has led design engineers to a new field called
Intelligent Automation. lntelligent Automation refers to the use of artificial
intelligence and soft computing (fuzzy logic, neural networks, genetic
algorithms, genetic programming, etc.) in the automation process. These
processes would commonly save on the development time, production time,
and reduces the overall cost. They may contribute to the overall system
MIQ (Machine Intelligence Quotient). This fourth volume of TSI Press Series
on Intelligent and Soft Computing constitutes a report on the research
papers presented at the second International Symposium on Intelligent
Automation and Control held within the World Automation Congress (WAC
'96) in Montpellier, France from May 28-30, 1996.

UNDERWATER ROBOTIC VEHICLES
Editor: J. Yuh
List price: $90
ABOUT THIS BOOK
The objectives of this three-part
book, which contains 14 chapters by 27 authors, are to guide the design
of advanced URV systems by providing information on recent developments
in vehicle technologies and to reveal potential application areas.
Most of the chapters in Underwater Robotic
Vehicles: Design and Control were prepared as papers for a workshop entitled
"Future Research Directions in Underwater Robotics," held August, 1994.
This workshop invited researchers, manufacturers, and users of Underwater
Robotic Vehicles (URVs), and its goals were to discuss the state-of-the-art,
explore current and future applications, and investigate effective collaboration
mechanisms among researchers and manufacturers. The authors who contributed
to this volume, like many of those attending the workshop, are recognized
leaders in the field of URVs.

A Tribute to Professor
Fazlollah Reza
In today's complex technological world
very few individuals can be found who have achieved world-class stature
in both science and literature. This is in contrast with the distant past,
when the scholarly tradition was directed towards a fundamental and broad
view of knowledge. One rare exception is Professor Fazlollah Reza, electrical
engineer, mathematician, and one of the leading authorities on Persian
literature, especially on the works of Abolghassem Ferdowsi the great
Persian Poet of the eleventh century. This book is a tribute to Professor
Reza, and it constitutes only a partial record of a Symposium held in
his honor of UCLA in Los Angeles, California, USA.
DISCONTINUOUS DEFORMATION
ANALYSIS (DDA) AND SIMULATIONS OF DISCONTINUOUS MEDIA
Geologic materials, rocks and soils,
are by their vary nature heterogeneous and discontinuous. On the grain
scale, soils and granular rocks are composed of randomly arranged particles,
either loosely packed or cemented together. On a larger scale, rocks masses
are typically made up of fractured or jointed blocks of rock, which may
have widely varying properties. On an ever larger scale, crustal faults
and tectonic plate boundaries are physical discontinuities in rocks and
soils which, due to relative motion between crustal blocks or plates,
are the cause of many destructive and deadly earthquakes around the world.
Such discontinuities, pervasive on all scales, makes it difficult if not
impossible, to model problems of realistic size or significance using
standard methods of continuum mechanics. Thus, the Discontinuous Deformation
Analysis (DDA) method wad developed. this computational method permits
analysis of multi-body contact and interaction problems, with specific
application to complex problems in geomechanics. The objective of this
Forum is to bring together experts from around the world to discuss foundations
of the method, to motivate future advancements of the method, and to share
their experiences in applying DDA to solve practical engineering problems.
